Random subjects about qrp and amateur radio in general. It is an informal net.

You do know that DMR is a digital based TDMA modulation system that is widely used for commercial and ham radio repeaters? Thanks and 73 Jim W7RY On 6/30/2021 9:39 PM, Robert wrote:

Hello Bert I listened to the link you sent and out of 17 talk groups for the US, your talk group 31654 did not appear on the screen. I tried global and US plus Everything but nothing appeared for the State of Kansas. There were two groups on from Missouri.

Top right hand side there is a red arrow (play) press that and you can enter TG number or select one of the displayed TG's only active, busy talk groups are displayed. TG'S like repeaters are idle most of the time. Bert

Oh, I wondered if there was a way to enter a TG number. Wish I had known how to do that last night. I will practice and be ready for next week. Thanks for your help.

Well Jim, those of us who get on the DMR net enjoy each others’ company. Our net leader Bert N0YJ chooses a topic — always QRP or ham radio related, and we in turn talk a little bit about it. Many of us have met yearly at Ozarkcon; but we’ve also gotten to know fellow QRPers from across the country via this DMR avenue who we may never meet. I’ve enjoyed the visits a lot… but that’s not all this club is about. You’re not required to participate in the DMR net. We also meet up every Wednesday on 40 and 80 meters — QRP CW. And we have the monthly Second Sunday Sprint — two hours of HF CW QRP contest fun. Something here for everyone… Jeff N0̸MII

I admit, I am an old codger, I had no idea what you guys were talking about either. But, always interested in learning, I have been googling. How about a 20 thousand foot overview for us dummies? It looks like you can buy a $50 handy talkie, log into a local repeater and digitally connect to your net… or do you just get connected via the web? 73, Gary WB6OGD

If you live in range of a DMR repeater that allows access to “user activated” Brandmeister talk groups, then a DMR radio is all you need. If not, then you can also use a “hot spot” which you can think of as your link to the DMR system. The hot spot uses a WiFi link to the Internet to connect you to the DMR system… in the same way that repeaters are linked. So: a DMR radio, plus either a DMR repeater in range, or your own hot spot, and you’ve got what you need. This site is a great introduction… and the site has a lot of details to help you get started if you take the plunge: Also see the web page of the Nixa ARC: Look for links to a preso by Chuck Kraly K0XM. And finally, you will need some patience, and a sense of humor. Both really help as you’re getting started with DMR — trust me :-) One last note: 4SQRP has a groups.io subgroup. If you want to discuss further or need help getting started, this is the place to be! 72, Jeff N0̸MII

Jeff does a fine job of putting out the DMR options. I'd also suggest Droid Star for android devices and the DVMega DVstick30 for windows devices. Both options give you the ability to go digital without the need for a radio. -Roger N0RSR

Not to be overlooked the 4SQRP group nifty web site Four State QRP Group (4sqrp.com) and the "Ozark Banner" newsletter Four State QRP Group (4sqrp.com)
Something for everyone's interest.
