Hi George,

Listening to you on 40 meters this morning in QSO with W8QP.
I tried to call you first but couldn't figure out which signal was your findamental
as you are radiating on the whole band 1.2khz apart.
Thought you might want to know about it before an OO sights in on you.

George,

I'd suspect that the final amp is oscillating.  Or could be in the chain prior to the final.

If you have an O'scope, you might take a looks that way.

Is is newly finished? Has it worked correctly in the past?

I am FAR from being an expert. But I wonder if your
xmit+ keying line is oscillating at about 1.2 kHz.

I would look over stuff in the neighborhood of Q1, Q4, Q9,
and Q10. Didn't get Q1 in there backwards for example?

But, I'm probably wrong.

Do you have an oscilloscope?

I have a scope but really don't know how to use it!!!. Going to take a chow break and then will look in the area you suggested. Tnx  Geo/W2BPI

Hi, George,

You might want to check the transmitter oscillator crystal.  I recall a very similar incident back in the 1960s when WA8JTA's Ameco TX-62 suddenly began putting out signals every 25kHz or so … he was using an 8mHz crystal, multiplied 18X to reach the two meter band.  He changed crystals, and the problem was solved.  He could never use that first crystal again; any attempt to utilize it resulted in multiple outputs.  Yours sounds very similar, and would appear to give similar results if you multiplied it to reach 2 meters.  I wish you the best in locating the problem!  72/73 de K8CQA

I tried changing xtal. Problem still there. If I listen to the osc without transmitting I do not hear any birdies. I have a 1/2 toroid left over. Parts list says it is L7. I see no place for it on the board or see it on the schematic? I have also tried running the rig on battery power.

I don't think battery power should make a difference one
way or the other. 60 or 120 Hz is way different from 1200 Hz
up and down the band.

I think I would try taking out C27 and see if that makes
any difference. You can just detach one side or the other.
It will kill the offsetting of your transmit frequency,
but that doesn't matter for the moment.

The oscillator works on receive, so seems like it has to be
just those components that come in on transmit.
You can remove the ones associated with the transmit offset
by taking out C27 or Q1 or R23, my preference would be C27.

I don't know anything about the L7 toroid thing.
There is the one in the power line.. do you have that
one in your accounting?
